Michael Jackson is the undisputed King Of Pop, he sang, wrote composed, arranged and directed most of his works. He built a brand out of his music videos (Thriller and the others) and his concerts were creative excellence, and their production had to meet his standards.
Even the professionals respected his inputs in their fields when working with him, but was he the GREATEST all-round entertainer that ever lived? Was he just an entertainer, a showman or did he master the business side of showbiz?
MICHAEL JACKSON, PAUL McCARTNEY, JAY Z, PUFF DADDY, AKON, 50 cent, KANYE WEST, D’BANJ, ALIBABA, DON JAZZY, TUFACE, ELDEE DA DON, BANKY W, AY, LAGBAJA, BASKETMOUTH, etc.
Do these names ring a bell? Do you remember them as entertainers or businessmen (entertainment preneurs) or as both?
Hollywood is synonymous with entertainment and as they say ‘There’s no business like showbiz’.
The giant called entertainment is the next best thing, and an untapped field in Africa. Nations that have found the key to tap into the entertainment industry are reaping the returns without breaking a sweat, because they have laid the foundations of infrastructure, laws, financial support, government supports, etc. Entertainment has no boundaries, it’s a global phenomenon and Africa is not left out. According to Toyin Subair former CEO of HITV, there’s a huge talent |content base and a huge market in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).
Femi Odugbemi, Nigerian Film Producer, sees an abundance of talents, creativity and innovation in the Nigerian industry. Both of them agree there’s a need for serious entertainment entrepreneurs to rise up and tie the talent and market ends together, and make an income out of it. They claim that whoever is able to connect the two will be able to monetize entertainment and smile to the bank.
Just like Jason Njoku has done in the digital distribution platform with irokoTV, Mo Abudu has done from TV talk show to EbonyLife TV and Ayo Richard Makun has built his AY comedy brand from shows to feature movies.
Also, Michael Collins aka don jazzy has built his Marvin Dynasty from music. Audu Maikori and MI have built the Chocolate City brand out of music, likewise Bankole Wellington aka Banky W built EME music and Kunle Afolayan built his Golden Touch Pictures from movies.
